WEAVING WITH NATURE: Craftsmanship for All

Weaving has a long tradition in Umbria, beginning as a purely popular art. Set in a charming stone farmhouse high in the hills, we organize a weaving workshop for beginners to explore this craft from scratch. We alternate cultural visits with nature walks and dedicate half a day to weaving under the guidance of an expert passionate about the art.

Thursday

Arrival at the farmhouse with a welcome aperitif. We’ll take an introductory walk to explore the surroundings and the history of the location. Fabrizia and Nicola, the owners, will introduce you to our weaving expert, who will open the door to the world of table-loom weaving: materials, tools, and colors. The course is open to all. We draw inspiration from nature for colors and materials that will be woven into the pieces crafted throughout the workshop. We’ll build a frame loom, which will be used for the entire course. Dinner is self-organized, either as a group or separately in each apartment.

Friday

he morning is dedicated to the first weaving lesson. We’ll discuss warp and weft, materials, weaving techniques, types of looms, and design our pieces as they start to take shape. We’ll then travel to Perugia to visit the Museum and Atelier of Hand Weaving “Giuditta Brozzetti,” one of the last remaining artisan weaving workshops in Italy, located within a church built in 1212. Known as the “Church of Saint Francis of the Women,” it is Perugia’s oldest Franciscan church. Here, we’ll see ancient looms still in operation and be captivated by the history of weaving. We’ll have dinner together in the city before returning to the farmhouse.

Saturday

We head to Pietralunga for a walk in the beautiful woods that surround it. Starting from the town center, we embark on one of the “wolf rings,” leading into one of Umbria’s most expansive forests. The summit area, marked by steep slopes with bare rock (in some areas forming striking gullies), offers panoramic views of adjacent mountain ranges: Serra di Burano, Monte Nerone, Monte Catria, and Monte Cucco. This is a perfect nature immersion to inspire our craft. Lunch will be at a local organic farm where we can enjoy typical, farm-to-table products. After returning to the farmhouse, we’ll begin our second weaving lesson. Dinner is self-organized.

Distance: about 8 km
Elevation gain: +250 m
Difficulty: moderate/easy

Sunday

In our final weaving lesson, we complete our projects. Each participant will have a woven square and strip to take home, along with a frame loom to continue the art of weaving independently. We then travel to Città di Castello, with a mandatory stop in Il Sasso to sample the famous “torta al testo,” either classically filled with sausage and greens or customized to taste. In Città di Castello, we’ll visit a special place integral to the region’s history, offering employment and economic independence to local women: the Tela Umbra Museum. Here, we’ll see characteristic Umbrian motifs on tablecloths and drapery, as well as working looms. We’ll conclude with a farewell aperitif.
