TREK TO VILLAGES & EREMI

Il Tugurio B&B is located in the center of Rivotorto, at the foot of the hill where the city of Assisi was built. It is the ideal destination for those wishing to explore Umbria and its wonders. The farmhouse is about 50 meters from the Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Rivotorto, also known as the Protoconvent of St. Francis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This Sanctuary houses the Sacred Tugurio, the humble shelter where St. Francis’s followers stayed before moving to the Porziuncola in Santa Maria degli Angeli. It was here, in the Sacred Tugurio, that St. Francis wrote the Rule of Life (poverty, simplicity, and prayer). Giuliana and Luigi, the owners of this accommodation, will welcome you with the warmth and kindness typical of Umbria’s rural traditions.

Within the garden, the owners have recreated a small wooden house that serves as a museum showcasing old farming tools belonging to the family. These include bed warmers, weighing scales, a hay cutter, an herb sieve, an orzo roaster, a tool for making flatbread, and much more.

Additionally, a partner swimming pool is located right in front of the property.

During this extended weekend, we will guide you on a discovery of the region through treks dedicated to Hermitages and Umbrian Villages!

AMONG THE VILLAGES OF SPELLO AND COLLEPINO
Arrival at the property and check-in. Drive to Spello for the excursion.

  • Difficulty: E (Hiking)
  • Elevation gain: 200 m
  • Distance: 5 km

This is an easy itinerary that follows the ancient Roman aqueduct connecting the villages of Spello and Collepino on the slopes of Mount Subasio. Along the way, you can enjoy the colorful olive groves, the scents of Umbria’s wild flora, and some fresh air. The aqueduct, a Roman construction, supplied water to Spello until the 19th century. Maintenance over the centuries has preserved many original elements, including segments built from white and pink limestone. In parts, the aqueduct even serves as a support structure for the main road connecting Collepino and Spello.

The excursion includes visits to Spello and Collepino, villages known for their historical and artistic heritage. Afterward, enjoy a tasting of “Spello’s gold,” the region’s renowned olive oil, at the Il Frantoio di Spello farm.

Friday

THE SASSOVIVO ABBEY AND HOLM OAK WOODS

  • Difficulty: E
  • Elevation gain: 250 m
  • Distance: 7 km

In the morning, drive to Ponte Santa Lucia near Foligno to begin the hike. The trail ascends through the forest, marked with red-and-white “Sent. C1” signs. It later descends to a paved road near an old washhouse and fountain with a picnic area. Short panoramic viewpoints punctuate the walk, leading to the Abbey of Santa Croce in Sassovivo.

Perched in an idyllic natural setting, the Abbey was founded in the 11th century and features historical and artistic treasures, including fresco fragments, the crypt of St. Maron (a 4th-century Syrian-Babylonian hermit), and the splendid Romanesque cloister by Pietro de Maria.

The day concludes with visits to the picturesque villages of Pale and Rasiglia. Rasiglia, known as the “Village of Streams,” is a charming cluster of houses built around flowing waters.

Saturday

HE HERMITAGE OF THE CARCERI AND MOUNT SUBASIO

  • Difficulty: E
  • Elevation gain: 400 m
  • Distance: 10 km

Drive to Assisi and park at the Hermitage of the Carceri, the starting and ending point of this circular hike.

Mount Subasio Regional Park, established in 1995, spans about 7,500 hectares in the Umbrian-Marche Apennines. The route begins at the Hermitage (800 m), ascending through lush holm oak woods to reach the summit meadows of Mount Subasio. At Sassopiano Cross (1,124 m), breathtaking views of the Umbrian Valley and Assisi unfold. The loop then descends back to the Hermitage.

The Franciscan Hermitage of the Carceri, situated at 800 m and just 5 km from Assisi, is a historic complex surrounded by natural caves used by early Christian hermits. A centuries-old holm oak on the site is linked to a legend about St. Francis preaching to birds, depicted in many artworks.

The day concludes with visits to the Hermitage and the town of Assisi.
