NATURE & GOOD FOOD

The “Fattoria dei Comignoli” is a charming agritourism venue located in the heart of Umbria, within the municipality of Perugia, along the “Wine Route of the Canticle,” on the ridges of hills painted by Perugino in his youth. Guests are welcomed in beautiful homes dating back to the mid-1600s.

The “I Comignoli” house was originally an old oil mill, known as “di Pascuccio,” built around the 1600s. It has since been restored while preserving as much of the original materials as possible. The “I Lecci” house, dated between 1400 and 1600, was once the cellar and storerooms of “Palazzo Neri,” as documented in the first Pontifical Land Registry of 1726. This property has undergone careful restoration using the same principles.

Located just 8 km from Perugia, the Fattoria dei Comignoli sits along the “Wine Route of the Canticle,” on the crest of the Hill of the Seven Saints (San Costanzo, San Vetturino, San Fortunato, San Martino, S. Enea, Sant’Elena, San Valentino). From here, it offers stunning views: to the east, the Tiber Valley stretches from Assisi to Todi, while to the west, the “Road of the Seven Valleys” descends gently from Perugia to Città della Pieve, the birthplace of Perugino.

In this extended weekend, we will guide you in exploring the region and its treasures with many exciting activities!

BETWEEN THE VILLAGES OF SPELLO AND COLLEPINO
Transfer to Spello for a hike.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Elevation gain: +200 m
  • Distance: 5 km

This simple route follows the ancient Roman aqueduct, connecting the villages of Spello and Collepino at the foothills of Mount Subasio. Along the way, enjoy the colors of the olive terraces and the scents of the spontaneous flora of central Umbria while breathing fresh, clean air. The ancient structure follows the path of the Chiona stream, and the trail traces its course entirely. The Roman aqueduct supplied water to Spello until the late 19th century.

During this pleasant and panoramic excursion, we recommend visiting Spello and Collepino, two charming villages rich in Umbria’s historical and artistic heritage.

Return to the farmhouse and MEDIEVAL-TEMPLAR THEMED DINNER
A narration of the historical period, which saw significant Templar presences in Umbria, paired with tastings of dishes still found in both local and refined cuisines: roveja (wild pea) soups, lentils, barley, spelt, seasonal vegetables, herb-flavored chicken, and much more.

Friday

DUNAROBBA AND THE FARNETTA WOODS
A medium-difficulty hike to explore the rolling hills characterized by lacustrine clay deposits. The uniqueness of this area lies in the dominance of the Italian oak (Farnetto), which gives its name to the small village of Farnetta. These oak woods have been a distinctive feature of the area since the early Middle Ages.

  • Distance: 8 km
  • Elevation gain: +300 m

The main highlight of this site is its significant paleobotanical value, home to the Fossil Forest of Dunarobba. This natural monument features about fifty fossilized conifer trunks from the Taxodiaceae family, a rare testimony to the ancient forests that once surrounded the shores of the prehistoric Tiber Lake.

Return to the farmhouse and OIL TASTING
Explore the aromas, flavors, and unique sensations of olive oil through a guided tasting session led by the owner, a trained oil taster. This experience, held in the Lecci Hall or outdoors during spring and summer, highlights the region’s renowned gastronomic and olive oil traditions.

Saturday

PERUGIA AND MONTE MALBE
A half-day hike through the woods of Monte Malbe, near Perugia. The vegetation resembles Mediterranean scrub, with holm oaks and dense undergrowth. The area is notable for the presence of heather-like heaths (Brugo), rare in Italy.
Along the route, discover the Romitorio with its water spring, the Trosce (important natural puddles vital for the local ecosystem), traces of ancient charcoal pits, and lime kilns. Wildlife sightings may include wild boars, foxes, porcupines, badgers, and amphibians like newts, salamanders, frogs, and toads.

THE FAIRY CASTLE: At the summit of a small promontory, this castle (or Fairy Dwelling) is built around the trunk of an old tree, with visible small rooms including bedrooms, a music room, a dining room, and baths.

After the hike, we recommend visiting Perugia to enjoy a chocolate pastry—indulging in the most universally loved guilty pleasure!

Return to the farmhouse and ETRUSCAN-THEMED DINNER
A feast inspired by Etruscan culinary traditions, including spelt soup, barley, seasonal vegetables, guinea fowl in herb sauce, and much more.

Sunday
