La Spinara is a farmhouse with rooms and apartments, perfect for groups of friends eager to explore this part of Umbria near the Tuscan border. Located along the Tiber cycling path, it sits in the classic countryside of the Valtiberina Valley. From here, with rental bikes, you can easily reach some of the villages along the river, such as Città di Castello and Sansepolcro.
THE CITERNA LOOP: Breathtaking Views and a Medieval Village. We are along the Franciscan path, one of Italy’s most significant spiritual routes. We offer a loop trail around Citerna, partially overlapping with the Camino. The journey begins in the picturesque hilltop village of Citerna, known as the “balcony of the valley.” After a stroll through its lovely square, we descend the hill to the southeast, following the Tau of the St. Francis path. Moving along smaller roads, we reach Monterchi, where we suggest visiting the Museo della Madonna del Parto by Piero della Francesca, followed by a tour of its charming historic center. The trail then leads up the hill past the chapel where Piero della Francesca originally painted the fresco. Finally, we return to Citerna, one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, well worth a visit and a memorable selfie.
TREK & WINE – THE METOLA LOOP: We head to the high hills above San Giustino Umbro, beginning at the Palerna winery, surrounded by stunning landscapes. With an incredible view of the Tiber Valley and vineyards all around, the scenery here is particularly striking during certain seasons. We take a scenic walk from the winery, following the high ridgelines that alternate between meadows and woods and are dotted with streams and creeks. Rich in wildlife, this area is lovely in spring for its blooming orchids and offers beautiful fall colors contrasting with the light marlstone. Back at La Palerna, we’ll enjoy a wine tasting, sampling a Cospaia 1441, a red Cimento, and another red from Valdimonte. Have you ever tried painting with wine?

BIKE AND TORTA AL TESTO: A cycling route from the farmhouse to Città di Castello on a hybrid or electric-assisted bike. The route is easy and mostly follows a bike path along the Tiber on a shaded, traffic-free dirt road. The scenic path, close to nature, runs alongside the river, offering views of herons, egrets, and night herons. We reach the Malakos Museum, an “unexpected” but fascinating encounter, hosting Europe’s largest private malacology collection with over 650,000 shells from around the world. We then continue to Il Sasso for a local lunch featuring torta al testo, a flatbread stuffed in endless ways—though the classic filling is Umbrian sausage and sautéed greens, simply top-notch! The informal setting by a stream ensures cool shade in summer. Heading back toward Città di Castello, we stop at the former tobacco drying sheds, now home to the great works of Alberto Burri, an internationally renowned contemporary artist. After exploring his combustions, cretti, blacks, and more, we return to the center of Città di Castello, perhaps for a taste of incredible artisanal gelato, before biking back to the farmhouse.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CASTLE! ART GARDEN Visit to Bufalini Castle. We travel to San Giustino to visit the magnificent Bufalini Castle, complete with its original spaces, furnishings, and exquisite Italian gardens. The tour focuses on the plants painted in the frescoes (by Gherardi, who also decorated Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio) and in the castle’s stuccoed rooms, followed by a live observation of these same plants in the garden. This is a culturally and botanically enriching visit that showcases the region’s art and history. Afterward, we recommend dining at one of the many traditional restaurants in the area to sample cuisine blending Umbrian and Tuscan flavors. A visit to nearby Sansepolcro and the Civic Museum, which houses works by Piero della Francesca, is also highly recommended.
