Il Tugurio B&B is located in the center of Rivotorto, at the foot of the hill where the city of Assisi was built. It is the ideal destination for those wishing to explore Umbria and its wonders. The farmhouse is about 50 meters from the Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Rivotorto, also known as the Protoconvent of St. Francis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This Sanctuary houses the Sacred Tugurio, the humble shelter where St. Francis’s followers stayed before moving to the Porziuncola in Santa Maria degli Angeli. It was here, in the Sacred Tugurio, that St. Francis wrote the Rule of Life (poverty, simplicity, and prayer). Giuliana and Luigi, the owners of this accommodation, will welcome you with the warmth and kindness typical of Umbria’s rural traditions.
Within the garden, the owners have recreated a small wooden house that serves as a museum showcasing old farming tools belonging to the family. These include bed warmers, weighing scales, a hay cutter, an herb sieve, an orzo roaster, a tool for making flatbread, and much more.
Additionally, a partner swimming pool is located right in front of the property.
During this extended weekend, we will guide you on a discovery of the region through treks dedicated to Hermitages and Umbrian Villages!
BIKES, OIL, AND WINE – Departure from the accommodation, just a stone’s throw from Assisi, for a cycling loop that captures the best of the Umbrian Valley! The route leads to Spello along the olive grove strip, skirting the base of Mount Subasio, offering beautiful glimpses of the landscape. Stop at an oil mill for a tasting to refuel. Continue toward Montefalco along secondary paved roads in the valley, with a second stop at the Caprai winery for a tasting of Sagrantino and Montefalco Rosso wines. Return to the accommodation to complete the loop. The ride covers about 60 km, with the option to use traditional or electric bikes.
LOOP TRAIL OF THE COLFIORITO MARSHLAND
Difficulty: E
Elevation Gain: 3430 m
Distance: 13 km
This circular hike within the Colfiorito Regional Park, the smallest protected area in Umbria, offers significant environmental as well as historical and cultural richness. The marsh spans over 100 hectares and is a rare and unique environment at the national level, characterized by various habitats connected to the wetland area. The presence of water, whether perennial or seasonal, is the defining element that substantially differentiates these environments.
The park, home to 150 bird species, is a paradise for both resident and migratory birds. Among these are the little bittern, grey heron, purple heron, night heron, and squacco heron. Passerines include the river nightingale, sedge warbler, reed warbler, bearded reedling, and penduline tit, alongside the mallard, coot, moorhen, and northern shoveler.
Transfer by car to Colfiorito and depart from the parking area in front of the Park’s headquarters (loc. Casermette) to begin the circular hike. The trail is well-marked by CAI signage and partially overlaps with the Franciscan Trail of the Marca and the Lauretana Way, identified as CFM and VL. The hike passes through Monte Carpello’s fortified village, a votive shrine, and skirts the Forcatura pine forest before reaching the main sinkhole of the marsh and the “Mollaro” house. The route then ascends to Monte Orve (926 m a.s.l.), site of the most significant fortification in the Piani Plestini. This pre-Roman settlement, organized on terraced slopes in a circular or elliptical layout, controlled access routes between neighboring territories. The hike concludes back at the starting point. A visit to the naturalistic museum located in the Park headquarters is recommended afterward.
BIKE RIDE ALONG THE TIBER, ANSA DEGLI ORNARI
Arrival and check-in at the accommodation. Transfer by car to Ponte San Giovanni to start the cycling tour. This enjoyable ride, suitable for all levels, follows the bike path along the Tiber River, part of a site of community interest, and includes a visit to the Ecomuseum. The presence of the Tiber has been pivotal in the development of the peoples who lived in central Italy in ancient times. For centuries, this river facilitated the exchange of goods and people, as well as cultural and civilizational encounters and conflicts.
In March 2004, after serious and dedicated efforts, the Tiber River Ecomuseum was established. Today, it serves as a dynamic territorial laboratory, focused on recovering traditions, old trades, underused or abandoned resources, historical, artistic, and monumental heritage, industrial archaeology, intangible heritage (living treasures) of the past and present, and the stunning landscape that frames the Tiber.
After the ride, a visit to Perugia’s beautiful historic center, with its historical and artistic museums, is highly recommended. Be sure to seek out a pastry or chocolate shop to recharge with the world’s most popular indulgence! It is also possible to book a visit to the “House of Chocolate.”
