The Balucca farmhouse is located on a high hill near Pietralunga and right next to the nature 2000 area of the Pietralunga woods, the largest forest in the region. Staying at Balucca means being immersed in nature and life on the farm with the animals and crops that surround the structure. It’s an experience full of discoveries and wonders! The program we propose is aimed at families who want to have fun together sharing wonderful moments in nature.
Arrival at the facility and an introductory tour of the surroundings, the agriturismo’s services, and, most importantly, the farm animals—two-legged, four-legged, winged, horned, white, black, spotted… How do they live? What do they eat? You’ll need to know everything because you’ll also take care of them! Special attention will be given to the Balucca’s ponies, who are always eager for cuddles and gentle brushing. Dinner at the agriturismo’s organic restaurant.
TREK WITH AN ENVIRONMENTAL MYSTERY: Who killed the wildcat?
After breakfast, a round of visits to the farm animals with Gino, the farmer and hiking guide. We’ll then transfer to Pietralunga for a walk through the beautiful surrounding woods. From the town center, we’ll set out on one of the so-called “wolf loops,” which leads us into one of Umbria’s largest forests. The summit area, marked by steep, eroded slopes with exposed rock (forming striking badlands in some spots), offers a stunning panoramic view of the nearby mountain ranges: Serra di Burano, Monte Nerone, Monte Catria, and Monte Cucco.
This won’t be just an ordinary hike but a trek with an ENVIRONMENTAL MYSTERY! Participants will follow the trail while trying to solve a mystery: a protected wildcat, monitored for a scientific repopulation project in the Apennines, has been killed. Wildcats are slowly repopulating the mountains of this part of Umbria. You’ll be given clues to solve the mystery, riddles, and puzzles, and in the end, we’ll uncover the culprit. Return to the agriturismo and an organic dinner.
BIRDWATCHING AND CITY HUNT
After breakfast, another visit to the farm animals. We’ll then head to the Spada Lakes Natural Park in Città di Castello, a protected reserve with environmental and educational purposes. This area is a restored extraction zone along the Tiber River, now equipped with birdwatching stations and an educational path featuring panels to help identify various species. After birdwatching, we’ll move to Città di Castello for a lunch break in one of the Upper Tiber Valley’s most important cultural centers. Here, we’ll participate in a city hunt to uncover architectural details, hidden corners, monuments, and curiosities of this beautiful Umbrian town—a fun activity to explore the city!
FROM WHEAT TO PASTA
Return to the facility for a group cooking class! Starting with flour milling, we’ll make homemade pasta. From simple tagliatelle, following the cook’s secrets, we’ll move on to stuffed pasta or gnocchi. We’ll prepare the sauce and enjoy lunch at the agriturismo’s organic restaurant. A final farewell to the farm animals and, of course, to the farmers you’ll remember until your next adventure at Balucca!
