GUBBIO AND THE DINOSAURS. From Porta Sant’Ubaldo in Gubbio, an exciting trekking trail begins along the picturesque Bottaccione Gorge, renowned for theories on the dinosaurs’ extinction. The hike starts with a panoramic ascent of Mount Ingino, followed by a walk along an ancient medieval aqueduct, giving the gorge its name (from “bottaccio”). Here, you can admire layered rocks that tell the geological history from prehistory to the present. In the 1980s, a significant concentration of iridium—a metal common in meteorites but rare on Earth—was discovered here, adding intrigue to extinction theories and making the experience even more fascinating. Back in the center of Gubbio, don’t miss the “Dinosaurs in the Flesh” Museum. This exhibition, with life-sized models, fossils, casts, explanatory panels, and multimedia content (including Paco Lanciano’s Quadrisfera), tells the story of Life on Earth, with a special focus on major extinctions.

  • Length: 7.5 km
  • Elevation gain: +250 m
  • If using the cable car to reach Mount Ingino, the length becomes approximately 6.5 km, with a positive elevation of 100 m.

WOODS, CHOCOLATE, AND CITY HUNTS – Monte Malbe. A half-day hike through the woods of Monte Malbe, just steps from Perugia. The vegetation is typically Mediterranean, with holm oaks and dense underbrush. Of particular interest is the presence of BRUGO (similar to wild heather), a rare plant in Italy. Along the route, we’ll encounter the Romitorio with its spring, the famous TROSCE (local name for puddles), crucial for maintaining the natural balance of the area, traces of ancient charcoal pits, and kilns where lime was once fired. A pleasant walk to get to know the forest and its residents: wild boars, foxes, porcupines, badgers… and especially amphibians like newts, salamanders, frogs, and toads, which find refuge in the trosce. At the end, we’ll head to Perugia via the mini-metro, taking you to the city center. Once there, enjoy a city hunt to discover architectural details, inscriptions, palaces, and charming corners that reveal the history of this beautiful Etruscan city. For the prize ceremony, we’ll visit a chocolate pastry shop to indulge in the world’s most beloved sweet sin!

BETWEEN WATERFALLS AND STREAMS, the Menotre Valley. We start our excursion from the small village of Pale. While admiring the beauty of this quaint village, the guide will share the history of its paper mills, which began operating in the 13th century using hydraulic power from the Menotre River. Here, the watercourse, channeled through a narrow, rocky passage, has created waterfalls, gorges, and caves—a true adventure for young and old! We walk toward the hermitage of Santa Maria di Giacobbe, a small gem perfectly set in the rock. Descending along a carriageway, we’ll follow the Lauretana Route, a path from Assisi to Loreto, which leads us back to our starting point. Along the way, we’ll see numerous waterfalls, one hiding a cave, and others disappearing into ground fissures only to reappear further downstream. Immersed in lush, varied vegetation, this will be a unique family experience! Along the path, we’ll also come across remnants of a Roman aqueduct and an ancient paper mill, evidence of the age-old connection between humans and this environment. A visit to the Grotto of the Abbess of Pale is possible. Still craving the sound of water? We recommend a trip to nearby Rasiglia, a charming village with watercourses running through it and full of scenic bridges and pathways.
