WATERBIRDS: Excursion to Lake Trasimeno: Lake Trasimeno is the largest freshwater body in peninsular Italy and serves as a true “treasure” of biodiversity. The residual riverside thickets, meadows, marshes, dense reeds, and areas of open and deep water create optimal habitats for a multitude of animal species typical of “wetlands.” Ornithologically, Lake Trasimeno is of exceptional importance, designated as a Special Protection Area. Among the larger species we can observe are: the coot, various ducks (especially the gadwall), the little grebe, the mallard, the teal, the tufted duck, the cormorant, and the great crested grebe. The flight and dives of the marsh harrier are truly beautiful. We will be accompanied by an expert ornithologist who will provide observation equipment. Visit to the Lake Trasimeno Fishing Museum in San Feliciano, which describes the history and life of Lake Trasimeno, touching on geological and environmental aspects and telling the story of the people who inhabit its shores through fishing tools and techniques. In the afternoon, we will visit Città della Pieve, exploring the town center, the Palazzo della Corgna, and discovering the works of Perugino and Pomarancio. Transfer to the accommodation and check-in.

Friday

WHO SOARS OVER THE GRASSLANDS – Monte Subasio (Assisi): About 80 bird species protected by the Birds and Habitats Directives have been reported at the summit of Monte Subasio. On a trek towards the summit grasslands, we can observe some extraordinarily beautiful birds, easily hunting small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians: the honey buzzard, the rare northern goshawk, the peregrine falcon, and even the golden eagle, which, although not nesting, flies over the top of Monte Subasio. Taking advantage of patches of beech forests and scattered shrubs, we can see the nightjar, the hoopoe, the lesser spotted woodpecker, the redstart, the reed bunting, and many other protected species of great natural interest. The hike offers wonderful views of the Umbrian Valley. The proximity to Assisi allows us to conclude the tour in the historic center, particularly at the Basilica, to view Giotto’s “Sermon to the Birds.” Nature and art hand in hand. Return to accommodation.

Saturday

DAY OF RELAXATION AT THE FACILITY: Take advantage of the many activities offered, choosing between horseback riding and a truffle-hunting activity with a dog. The facility offers both services directly and is affiliated with FITETREC-ANTE and A.S.C. Equestrian Sports. In the afternoon, we will transfer to the municipality of Umbertide for an evening trek in the Monte Acuto Park to listen to the calls of nocturnal raptors. We will walk a loop through the forest surrounding the Abbey of Montecorona, a lush oak forest interspersed with turkey oaks and sometimes chestnuts. Here we will listen for the calls of nocturnal raptors that populate the area, such as the tawny owl, the common owl, and the little owl. Their crepuscular habits, large luminous eyes, haunting and penetrating vocalizations, and feathers that allow them to fly silently make these birds seem like specters wandering through our forests. Afterward, dinner at the Abbey and return to accommodation.

Sunday

ORVIETO AND THE ALVIANO OASIS: The WWF Oasis of Lake Alviano encompasses all the typical environments of freshwater wetlands: marsh, pond, swamp, and hygrophilous forest. With its 900 hectares, it is one of the most important wetlands in central Italy under special protection. Thanks to the diversity of habitats, we find many species of birds during various times of the year, both migratory and resident, including herons, marsh harriers, kingfishers, spoonbills, great crested and little grebes, and numerous duck species. With a telescope in hand, we venture into the reserve, taking advantage of the observation huts for a silent observation of the rich nature that surrounds us. Afterward, we will explore the city of Orvieto, an Etruscan city perched on a tuff cliff. We will visit the beautiful underground city, guided by a local expert, and not miss the incredible hydraulic work of the St. Patrick’s Well and the magnificent, timeless Duomo.
