TREK TO POLVESE ISLAND
Boarding at San Feliciano for a crossing of Lake Trasimeno. Once on Polvese Island, the hike begins at the Service Center, leading to the Castle and the Church of San Giuliano. From there, the path continues along the reed beds on the southern part of the island to reach the Church of San Secondo and the Olivetan monastery. Following the ancient Procession route, the trek arrives at the Aquatic Plant Garden, then circles back to the Service Center. Polvese Island was declared a scientific-didactic park in 1973 and is rich in fascinating natural and historical features. This easy, varied route offers a fresh perspective on Lake Trasimeno. After returning to the agriturismo, join a cooking class on typical Umbrian dishes followed by dinner.
HALF-DAY HIKE IN MONTE MALBE WOODS
This half-day hike takes you into the woods of Monte Malbe, close to Perugia. The vegetation is classic Mediterranean scrub, with holm oaks and dense underbrush. Of special note is the presence of BRUGO (similar to wild heather), which is extremely rare in Italy. Along the trail, discover the Romitorio with its freshwater spring, the famous “TROSCE” (local term for ponds), vital to the area’s natural balance, traces of ancient charcoal pits, and “calcinaie” where lime was once processed. This is a lovely walk for learning about the forest and its wildlife, including wild boars, foxes, porcupines, badgers, and, most of all, amphibians such as newts, salamanders, frogs, and toads, who find refuge in the trosce. At the end, we suggest a visit to Perugia via the mini-metro, taking you directly into the city center. We’ll seek out a chocolate-pastry shop to indulge in the world’s most shared guilty pleasure! Return to the agriturismo for dinner together.
BETWEEN THE VILLAGES OF SPELLO AND COLLEPINO
We’ll drive to Spello for a hike. Difficulty: E; Elevation gain: 200 m; Distance: 5 km. This easy trail follows an ancient Roman aqueduct, linking the two villages of Spello and Collepino at the foot of Monte Subasio. Along the way, admire the colors of the olive-covered slopes and breathe in the scents of the wild flora of central Umbria. The ancient structure winds along the Chiona stream’s slope, and the trail follows its entire path. Originally built by the Romans, the aqueduct supplied water to Spello until the 1800s. Over centuries, various maintenance efforts adapted the construction, which still retains original sections today. Partly underground, the aqueduct includes limestone stonework from local sources. Numerous rectangular openings along the valley-side wall were made for inspection, while vents ensure air circulation. In one section, the structure even supports the main road linking Collepino and Spello. We’ll return to the agriturismo for an olive grove tour and a tasting of the farm’s olive oil, followed by a cooking class and dinner.
THE TRUFFLE EXPERIENCE
We’ll start the day with an exciting truffle hunt, accompanied by trained dogs, a unique experience that reveals the special bond between truffle hunter and their loyal companion—a crucial element for a successful search. Umbria, renowned for its truffles, offers an array of these delicacies year-round. After the hunt, indulge in a tasting that celebrates the unique flavor of this prized fungus: truffle tagliatelle, aromatic bruschetta, eggs in delightful combinations, and a six-dish selection for an unforgettable culinary experience.
