WATER BIRDS
Excursion to Lake Trasimeno: Lake Trasimeno is the largest freshwater lake in Italy’s mainland and is a true “treasure trove” of biodiversity. The remaining riverside woodlands, meadows, bordering ponds, dense reed beds, and areas of open, deeper water create optimal habitats for a multitude of species typical of wetland areas. From an ornithological perspective, Lake Trasimeno is an exceptionally important site, designated as a Special Protection Area. Among the larger species that can be observed are the coot, various ducks (especially wigeon), gadwall, mallard, teal, pochard, cormorant, and great crested grebe. The flights and dives of the marsh harrier are a beautiful sight. We will be accompanied by an expert ornithologist who will provide observation materials. We suggest visiting the Lake Trasimeno Fishing Museum in San Feliciano, which describes the history and life of Lake Trasimeno, covering geological and environmental aspects, and telling the story of the people who have lived along its shores through the tools and techniques of fishing.
WHO FLIES OVER THE GRASSLANDS – Monte Subasio (Assisi)
At the summit of Monte Subasio, approximately 80 bird species protected under the Birds and Habitats Directives have been recorded. During a hike toward the summit grasslands, we can observe some extraordinarily beautiful birds, often seen hunting small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians: the honey buzzard, the rare goshawk, the peregrine falcon, and even the eagle, which although not nesting, soars over Monte Subasio’s peak. Taking advantage of patches of beech forest and scattered shrubs, we may spot the nightjar, hoopoe, lesser spotted woodpecker, rock thrush, bunting, and other protected species of great natural interest. The hike offers breathtaking views of the Umbrian Valley. The proximity to Assisi allows us to end the tour in the historic center and, in particular, at the Basilica to admire Giotto’s depiction of Saint Francis’ “Sermon to the Birds.” Nature and art go hand in hand.
SUNSET HIKE – owls, tawny owls, and little owls
A wonderful exploratory hike in the ancient forests of Monte Cucco Park, in the silence of dusk, when nocturnal animals awaken and reveal their presence with their ancestral calls. The route begins from the meadows of Pian delle Macinare, following a scenic loop that first runs along the Rio Freddo, reaching Val di Ranco, then continues along a beautiful path where one encounters centuries-old beeches with enchanting autumn colors. Walking through these woods feels like stepping into an almost magical world, interspersed with light and shadows created by the thick foliage. At the end of the walk, there is the option to dine at the refuge in Pian delle Macinare. Before the hike, a visit to Gubbio is recommended to try the local specialty “crescia sul panaro” with friccò!K
