Here, surrounded by nature, you can admire ancient woods and mostly flat terrain. This site is a true biogeographic gem, with vast forests that represent the last remnant of lowland forests from Central Europe here in Umbria, offering unique views along the route. It is possible to reach Cortona for a visit to the town center and return with a breathtaking view of Lake Trasimeno, joining the Bonifica cycle path along the Chiana canal. BIKE, OIL, AND WINE – Starting from Assisi, this loop captures the best of the Umbrian valley! From Assisi, you’ll reach Spello along the olive belt at the base of Subasio, offering beautiful glimpses of the landscape. A stop at an olive oil mill with a tasting provides a delicious break. The journey continues toward Montefalco along the valley on secondary paved roads, with a second stop for a tasting of Sagrantino and Montefalco red wines at the Caprai winery. The route then ascends back to Assisi, completing the loop. This ride covers about 60 km with a good amount of elevation on the return to Assisi.
THE TIBER CYCLE PATH: The Tiber cycle route from San Giustino to the Alviano Oasis is one of the key cycling routes in the region, designed as a traffic-free cycle path, with a few short stretches on secondary roads, ideal for enjoying the beautiful natural views along the Tiber. The path is not technically demanding, suitable for MTB or trekking bikes, whether pedal-powered or electric. The route is practically flat, on a gravel surface, with no particular challenges. It’s not uncommon to spot characteristic birdlife, such as herons, egrets, and night herons, in a natural setting with typical riparian flora under the shade of poplars, willows, alders, and locust trees. You can complete the segment from Città di Castello to San Giustino, including a beer tasting at a craft brewery, with a return on secondary paved roads. A visit to Città di Castello is recommended. There is also the option of arranging a transfer for rented bikes to start on an alternative segment.
