STROLL WITH THE DOG: On the property grounds, in a nearby grove, we’ll meet our four-legged friend and his truffle-hunting owner for an easy walk to search for “black gold”—the truffle! Along the way, we’ll uncover the secrets and virtues of this prized subterranean fungus with its unmistakable aroma that enhances many local dishes. Not only will truffles be the focus of our walk; we’ll also learn about the dog leading us. How is it trained? Which breeds are best suited? Does it enjoy hunting truffles with us? The excursion concludes with a tasting of truffle-topped homemade tagliatelle at the agriturismo.

Friday

ARCHEOTREKKING ON MONTE ACUTO: This loop hike takes place in Monte Acuto Park. We’ll start by ascending toward the mountain peak, walking through olive groves and passing a medieval tower. The trail steadily climbs through shaded oak woods, eventually opening onto summit meadows. From here, we’ll reach the “hump” of this giant overlooking the Upper Tiber Valley, all the way to the summit cross. We’ll be treated to panoramic views stretching from Gubbio and its Palazzo dei Consoli to Lake Trasimeno and Monte Subasio. Near the summit, we’ll pass by an archaeological site, excavated in the 1980s, that revealed a sanctuary dating back to the 6th–4th centuries BCE. Bronze statuettes—small votive statues in human and animal forms—were found here. We’ll then descend the southern side, passing the ancient settlement of Galera before returning to the starting point.

MOUNTAIN BIKING: This route winds through the area of Pietralunga, on the opposite side of the Tiber Valley in the Umbrian-Marchigian Apennines. Starting from Agriturismo La Cerqua, which provides electric or standard mountain bikes, the loop can be as challenging as you choose and leads into Pietralunga’s magical forests of oak and centuries-old beech trees. Some sections of the more open route offer splendid views. The route is provided as downloadable GPX tracks. Lunch at the agriturismo with an organic menu concludes the experience.

CANOEING ON THE TIBER: This half-day experience is dedicated to the Tiber River, where it flows in its full breadth, creating an extraordinary natural setting with lush riverside vegetation and typical birdlife, such as herons, egrets, and ducks. From Città di Castello, we’ll paddle upstream for about 3 km before simply following the current back with an experienced guide. All equipment is provided. The Canoe Club is located just outside the city walls, so we suggest visiting Città di Castello and enjoying a lunch break.
